Press Release
May 2, 2012 – It’s been Pro Stock Boot Camp this week for Sydney Pro Stock racer Jason Grima. Following his runner-up finish at the recent ANDRA Pro Series round at Sydney Dragway in March, Grima is keen to bounce back with a win this weekend’s Nitro Champs.
Grima decided to set up camp at Sydney Dragway so he could focus on the job at hand. “Setting up at the track just makes it easier to work on the car and have no distractions. It feels like Boot Camp with myself and the crew getting in shape for this weekend, “laughed Grima. “We just forgot our Army greens.”
But rest assured the battle will be on the drag strip especially in the highly competitive class of Pro Stock. At the March ANDRA Championship round, Grima qualified the PC Group 2010 Ford Mustang sixth with a solid 7.087. This was just 0.067 behind the number one qualifying position.
In the first round of eliminations Grima took the win over Lee Bektash in a very close dual with a slightly better reaction and a winning 7.102 ET to a 7.104.
Then in the second round Grima defeated Aaron Tremayne with a 7.077 to a 7.12 decider. In the semi finals it was Michael Ali who was taken out of competition when his 7.17 was beaten by a quicker 7.14.
So into the final Grima certainly had the momentum to win but his reaction time cost him the title when a mechanical failure saw the PC Group Mustang stumble off the line. A 0.311 light to a 0.047 from Shane Tucker gave him a holeshot advantage and this was enough for Tucker to take the win despite clocking a shower ET. Grima recorded a losing 7.085 to a 7.185.
“Our PC Group Ford Mustang performed very well for our team and while a win was certainly within reach, the points we earned moved us into the Top 10 of the Championship. With only two more rounds left for the 2011/12 season, it could be anyone’s and we’d like to think we are still in with a chance, “said Grima.
“We had actually hurt the motor that weekend in the first round so to take it to the final was a great effort by my brother James who put the Rick Watters-built engine back together again along with Jonathon and the crew, who all worked very hard and put in some late nights.”
As part of the Boot Camp week Grima took advantage of a testing opportunity on Wednesday. Grima said he wanted to scuff in some new boots and also find a cure for a handling problem with the PC Group Ford Mustang.
“We made two runs today, “quoted Grima. “The best run was a 7.08 and followed with a 7.11 and it looks like we have sorted out the chassis for this weekend.”
Grima also wanted to say Happy Birthday to team member Troy “Snakes” O’Shea who turned 34 today.
