22 NOV 2011 - Red Hot Rocket Nostalgias!
Last Sunday Sydney fans were treated to an awesome show of Nostalgia Drag Racing at the inaugaral Rocket Retro Drags and Nitro Fest.
Over 180 Race Cars and Bikes packed into the Pit Area along with plenty of Trade Stands, The Shannons Show n Shine and even a jumpy castle for the kids in the huge marquee.
As planned many of yesterdays and current Drag Racing fans and friends rocked over to Sydney Dragway after the Rocket Industries Open Day to honour the Pioneers of our sport at the first Annual ANFA Pioneer Awards and judging by the amount fans present this is only going to get bigger as the years roll on.
Then on Sunday it was time to get those cars out and play with them on the Drag Strip ... and even though we got shortened by the weather there was plenty of great racing throughout the day with the Shoot Out Brackets still being able to be decided.
![]() Andrew Cowin sent a buzz around the venue when he blasted the Nitro Express 57 Chevy N/FC down the track in just 5.775 seconds at 244.43mph to be the quickest Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car in the country ... |
![]() ... While Shane Olive in the second of the Cowin Family Racing Nostalgia Funny Cars also ran a personal best with a 5.883 but his 245.72 mph made hime the fastest N/FC in the land too! |
![]() Andrew also did double duty doing an exhibition pass in his dad's Replica AA/FA Psycho III ... that, to many people present (including me)was the highlight of their day! |
![]() Speaking of Drag Racing Families ... The Blake Family was out in force with Geoff driving their Blown FED to a PB 6.602 @ 219.36 mph to go to Runner Up in Top Eliminator ... |
![]() ... while brother Graham did duties in their Naturally Aspirated FED and took the Win in Middle Eliminator! |
![]() Paul Cashin's 48 Anglia Van is typical of the tough little gassers that were out for a play. |
![]() ... and what would a Nostalgia Drags be without the HAMBsters out there going for it and Ezio Cocciotti took his to the runner spot! |
![]() There were also 3 Nitro AA/FD's on site and here is Norm Longfield giving his customary "peace" sign during the burnout! |
![]() AA/Dave Armstrong has found some more power in his AA/FD and is slowing coming to grips with it as he muscles his Dragster down the track that was behaving more like a Fuel Altered!. |
![]() Luke Shepherd was dong the steering in Steve and Wendy Turner's Black Widow however a broken roll pin in the oil pump ended their day early as the weather set in just as they had it fixed. |
![]() Kerrie Stewart was having play in Rex Websters A40 and showed she sure knows how to do a skid! |
![]() Ron Earley towed down from Queensland with his beautiful Blown FED running in Top Eliminator. |
![]() Speaking of Queenslanders, Paul Shackleton brought his N/FC down with Robert West doing the driving chores in the 'Shack Attack' Mustang! |
![]() Now this my friends is one tough Street Rod, Tony Younis' 382 cubic inch Chev powered Anglia was lifting the front up and running nines at over 130 mph all day! |
![]() There were Classic Bikes running on the day as well and there don't come more Classic than Trevor Harrison's RD 400 Yamaha. |
![]() Henry Spicak's Vee Dub is a regular on the race track for many many years and still goes as hard as ever. |
| As we said at the top of this report unfortunately the weather decided to intervene before we could get the Finals done but we could work our the Winners and Runners up in the Chicago Shootout Brackets; |
